menal was founded in 1992 by Dr. Peter Engelmann in Herbolzheim, Germany, who had a vision of creating an “external in-house lab”. MENAL, which stands for MEdical, NAtural science Lab, is an idea that has been standing tall for over 30 years. From the very beginning, we have endeavored to be a reliable bioanalytical partner to the research and manufacturing pharmaceutical industry. In 2002, we moved to Emmendingen, where today we occupy 800 m2 of cutting-edge laboratories and offices.
Today, menal can look back on 30 years of history and counting, over 70 customers and more than 1,000 successful projects.
Tobias Engelmann is now carrying Dr. Peter Engelmann’s philosophy forward into menal’s second generation, in close cooperation with our customers and with the transparency and continuous flexibility still at the heart of our work today.

In late July 2015, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) conducted an inspection and audit of menal GmbH. The audit focused on compliance with Good Clinical Practice (GCP), biomarker assays, as well as menal’s coagulation services. After four days, it was clear that there was no need for a “483” and that menal had passed the audit with a result of “no findings”.
